Synchronize SmarterMail with Outlook Using the Add to Outlook Feature

This article applies to recent versions of SmarterMail Enterprise. View articles for SmarterMail 15.x and earlier.

SmarterMail supports the two-way sync of personal and shared user resources like calendars, contacts, and tasks with Outlook using Add to Outlook (Sharepoint Sync). Add to Outlook does not, however, sync domain resources like shared calendars and contacts. Although the steps below show you how to sync your SmarterMail calendar with Outlook, the procedure is similar for synchronizing contacts and tasks.

NOTE: Sharepoint Sync does not support notification features, so items like SmarterMail calendar reminders will not be available within Outlook. For full integration, MAPI should be used for Outlook Windows 2016 and 2019, and EWS should be used for Outlook Mac.

Follow these steps to sync your SmarterMail calendar with Outlook from the Web interface:
  1. From your computer that has Microsoft Outlook installed, log in to the SmarterMail web interface.
  2. Click the Calendar icon.
  3. Click the Actions menu and then Add to Outlook in the navigation pane toolbar.
  4. This will open a new window that contains details about the connection you are about to make with Outlook. You may keep the default description and display names or type your own in the appropriate fields.
  5. Click OK.
  6. This will open the 'Launch Application' window. Click OK to launch Outlook.
  7. To allow SmarterMail to connect with Outlook, click Yes.

Your SmarterMail and Outlook calendars are now synchronized and any changes you make to the calendars will be updated in real time.

Feedback

What is the point of having Domain Resources (calendars) if you can't add them into Outlook using the "Add to Outlook" method - especially since you still don't have ActiveSync installed natively. Nobody actually uses the web interface of any email server except when they need to (away or can't get into their mail client). I was happy when I found out we could add specific domain calendars but then totally deflated when I found out nobody would actually be able to use it. <br /> <br />** Also , you need to have a way to AUTOMATICALLY attach domain resources and SEND out the REQUEST to ADD it TO Outlook so we can make it simple for end-users. Making everyone have to log into their webmail account and figure out how to attach and then add it to Outlook is a night mare in any size of organization!!

It would be nice to have same function as Outlook (Exchange) has. This is a good workaround but not ease of use for the end of user. I hope we can look for updates on this function soon.

How do we make Smartermail Calendar as our default calendar in Outlook?

Do you know if Add to Outlook option works in Outlook 2016, because only sincronize 1 contact instead of all contacts, or is require the ActiveSync option to sincronize all and have a cost

It should, yes. If you're having issues, you may need to contact your email service provider or perhaps submit a ticket to our support team...

Recently upgraded to Smartermail Enterprise 6925.
It appears the update added a new connection to our SMartermail Shared calendar for some users, but not others. The new connection is working for the users, but the old connection on the others is not. I removed the old, non-working connection, and re do the Add to Outlook through the web interface. Now getting error: Task 'SharePoint' reported error (0x8004010F) : 'The SharePoint List (SmarterMail - PRA Calendar) cannot be found. If the problem continues, contact the SharePoint site administrator. HTTP 404.'
Tried cleanup and checkdsk. Reboot. No matter how many times I delete the the old connection and try to re-add to Outlook, we get the error when syncing. Any other suggestions?

Hi William. It's possible that you are experiencing an Add to Outlook bug. In our latest build, Build 6948 (Jan 9, 2019), we fixed an issue related to Add to Outlook: "Fixed: Appointments with GUIDs containing dashes do not sync via SharePoint (Add to Outlook)." Would you please upgrade to the latest build? If the issue persists, I'd encourage you to submit a ticket to the Support Department. They can be reached by logging in here: https://www.smartertools.com/account#/support.
