Responding from an alias
Problem reported by Christopher Hiatt - May 4 at 10:26 AM
Resolved
I was trying to test how to respond from an alias email and did not see clear instructions. My expectations are that when I open an email inside webmail that was sent TO an alias address, this address would auto-populate as my FROM address when I respond. Alternately I would have a drop down menu when composing an email to select any alias already in that users alias list.

Is this feature working yet?

Hi Christopher!

It is! I'm happy to help clarify how it works. In SmarterMail 16.x, we've added two features that users have been requesting. For aliases, we've added "Allow users to send from this alias." When enabled, users can manually change their From address to the alias address by using the Send From dropdown on new emails and replies. (This is a manual change to prevent confusion for users who do not wish to reply from their alias address.)

In addition, when an alias allows users to send from its address, the Domain Administrator can go to the Domain Settings > Signatures section and choose to require a specific signature with that alias or allow users to map their own.

We've also added an option in a user's Account Settings for "Use To: address for replies." This feature is geared toward users who wish to reply automatically from their alias address; however, it also applies to some other cases as well. When enabled, any reply that you send via webmail will use that email's To: address as the From address. This setting applies to email aliases, domain aliases, plus addresses, disposable addresses and SMTP accounts. For example, when this setting is enabled and you reply to a message sent to an alias you're part of, the alias address will automatically be used as the Send From address. (You can manually change it back if you wish.)

Let me know if you have any questions or problems! From our local testing, things have been working well with these additions.

Hi Christopher,

What is the build number of the BETA version you're testing? In my testing with SmarterMail 16.0.6334, this functionality is working as expected.

1. For the initial switch to 16.0, updating all email aliases to enable the "Allow users to send from this alias" setting may indeed be time consuming. However, this is due to SmarterMail providing the flexibility of enabling the Send From functionality for specific aliases. That said, I will bring this up with my team to consider a quicker way enabling this setting might be done.

2. If you don't see the Send From dropdown when creating an email or replying to one, it means that the account is only configured to use its SmarterMail email address. The only time a user will see the Send From dropdown when sending a message is if: that user is part of an alias that allows Send From privileges, a domain alias has been configured for the domain, or if they have an SMTP Account configured for their account. Keep in mind that only users who are part of the email alias will be able to send from its address. If a user is part of an alias that has Send From privileges, they'll see the following:

3. I'm having similar trouble with the "Use To: address for replies" setting when replying to emails to a Plus Address. I have reported this to my team, and they will review the functionality to get this fixed.

I still cannot get this to work at all. Under no circumstance will the compose window show the from address and/or a pull down menu to choose the user alias to reply from. I re-installed the latest beta and tested this on Chrome, IE11 and Edge browsers.

I've logged in as a mail server admin and propagated to all users on all domains to "respond from To Address".
I've logged in as the domain admin and made sure this feature was enabled for a few different domains.
While logged in as the domain admin I opened several user alias addresses and selected to "allow users to send from this alias". I've also tried it while including all domain users and not including all domain users.
I've also created new accounts on different domains and create specific user alias address for those accounts. They still do not show up in the new message compose window.

The only way I can get any account to send from an alias is to open the user account settings and change the default from address in the webmail box for that user. I also recall a user being able to create their own alias in V15. I can't find anywhere for a user to do that now. Looks like only the domain admin can do that on this version.

Christopher,

We were able to pinpoint this issue and the fix will be included in today's release of SmarterMail 16!

The bug had to do with signatures. If there were no signatures created at the User or Domain level, the Send From dropdown would not appear.

In my testing, I went into my user settings and added a signature. Once I did, I was able to see the Send From dropdown in the compose window. If the Domain Admin adds a signature (it doesn't need to be mapped to the domain, simply added in the Signatures card), it will enable the Send From dropdown for your users as well.

This resolution will be published this afternoon, but in the meantime, you may be able to bypass this issue by adding a domain signature that users can override.

Let me know what you find!
