Only show domain contacts in user list for chat, not all GAL members
Idea shared by Erik White - 5/1/2017 at 12:14 PM
Proposed
When on chat you can see the entire list of users, whether offline or online. This can be problematic as there is no option to hide the list of total users and only be able to see users once added to contact list.

Hey Erik,

Can you clarify what you mean by this? Chat can only be used among members of your domain, which is why the users list displays ALL user accounts on the domain, as well as any aliases that have been enabled as a chat room. It may be tough to show regular Contacts here as well or instead, since Contacts can be created for external email addresses as well. When you say you want to "be able to see users once added to contact list," are you looking for a way to show only the specific GAL entries who are in your contacts list as well? Or are you essentially just looking for a way to add favorites to the user list so that only specific users show in the list at a time?

Personally, I prefer the navigation pane to display only the conversations that I'm actively participating in, not the entire list of users of the domain. But to accommodate that, we'd need to store a separate list of domain members and allow users to open and close conversations as they wish. It's possible that something like that may be considered in the future, though it's not available at the moment.

Can you clarify your thoughts please?

Yes of course, I mistakenly did not specify that we are hoping to do exactly what you mentioned at the end: have the ability to hide all members of a domain from eachother until they are added onto the contacts list. Much like facebook messenger, how when you get on you don't see all the users that exist on facebook as a whole, only the user you have 'friended'. The ability to control the showing of names within a domain is important to us. Thank you. (This also applies to 15.5, which we are attempting to work with at the moment)

Thanks for the clarification, Erik! At the moment, this is not how the XMPP server behaves within SmarterMail, and I don't believe any changes to this functionality will be included in the SmarterMail 16.0 release. As such, I'm going to transfer this thread out of the SmarterMail 16.x BETA category and into the standard SmarterMail category of the Community. I don't want this to be lost when we close down the BETA threads at the end of the release.

I also changed this thread from a Problem to a Proposed Idea. Our development team will consider your request and other users can show their agreement by voting up the thread or add their input by replying.

Thank you, Eric!
