SmarterMail 15 sends '554' bounce reports to Google gmail senders

SmarterMail version 15

Problem: I've got three SmarterMail 15 clients, so far, who have told me over the past two weeks that email sent to them from gmail.com addresses get bounced due to the SmarterMail spam filter. Eg.:

Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the server for the recipient domain judybyron.com by tarsier.viviotech.net. [162.217.171.90].
The error that the other server returned was:
554 Sending address not accepted due to spam filter

I use Bruce Barnes's antispam settings, based on his document at ChicagoNetTech. This problem started April 12, 2016 -- about two weeks ago. Nothing else, to my knowledge, has changed on the server.

Has anyone else run into this?

Did something change at gmail.com?

I would really like to fix this, since Google mail is bouncing when it hits my server. Thank you for your ideas and advice as always.

Eric

Did you setup a feedback loop?

Eric,
Make sure your smtp log is set to Detailed. Then check one of the messages. The line should look like this.
Mail rejected due to SMTP Spam Blocking: Barracuda, Protected Sky - Red, SORBS 06 - RECENT, SPAMHAUS - PBL 2, SPAMHAUS - XBL 1
This will give you a List of the Tests that Failed.

Hi, Bruce, I set up feedback loops for all of the ISPs listed in UnlocktheInbox. I did not know there was a feedback loop for Google Mail -- I will look for it. Thank you.

Replying to other replies in a moment! =) Thank you. E

Good morning, Bruce,

I've been reading up on the Google Gmail feedback loop (FBL):

https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6254652?hl=en&ref_topic=6259779

I'm not sure what to do next, though. The Google Gmail FBL seems intended for use with outgoing email campaigns:

"Senders will need to embed a new header called the Feedback-ID, consisting of parameters (called Identifiers) that uniquely identify their individual campaigns."

I am guessing, by "new header" Google means that I need to insert a new Feedback-ID parameter in my SmarterMail SMTP header -- do I understand that correctly?

And will this help me with the 554 messages that my SmarterMail server sends to incoming Gmail messages since April 12?

Thank you as always for your patient help. I really appreciate you, and everyone on this forum.

Eric

Eric,
I think you need to look at your end. Your server is saying the email FROM gmail is spam. Looks like you have a RBL not working or Scoring correctly.

Matthew, I agree. I'm looking in the log files to see what RBL is scoring against Google Mail. I'm not seeing any clues though.

In a little while I'll report what I see in the logs. taking care of my kiddo right now. =) More soon. thank you again for your help.

Hmmm. Google messages get a spam weight of 10, thanks to SORBS.

I am thinking I will disable the SORBS - Recent RBL and see if that fixes the problem.

I disabled the SORBS - Recent RBL, and that seems to have solved the problem.

The solution to this was to disable the SORBS - Recent RBL. 554s from gmail.com have stopped. Friends, thank you as always. Peace to you. Eric
