postmaster & abuse alias not passing DNS test
Problem reported by Jens Straten - 12/4/2015 at 12:30 PM

Is it normal that a domain having a postmaster and abuse account as an alias is not passing DNS testing (e.g. DNSstuff)?
Wouldn't it be better to have dedicated setting entries for postmaster and abuse on domain level?
Right now I only see an option for postmaster on admin level which doesn't make much sense.

Create aliases for postmaster and abuse in each domain and point them to an address from which you will respond.

If you are on SmarterMail 14.4, you can set the domains to automatically used the default postmaster@ account for the primary domain, but will still have to create the abuse@ alias for each domain.

Hi Bruce,
I am sorry if my first post wasn't clear. I have already setup postmaster and abuse for each domain. Both are working when I sent an email either address. However, when I use online DNS or mail server test utilities like DNSstuff, I am getting a warning message that both accounts are missing. So, I am guessing that they are doing some kind of test that concludes that my server is not RFC compliant. I guess there could be a problem with the test method as well, but I am getting the same message on multiple sites.
Hope this is more clear.
Cheers,
Jens

Thanks for the clarification . . .

Do you have greylisting enabled?

If so, set your timing to the following:

Minute(s)
Minute(s)
Day(s)

and then do an initial test, and retry about two minutes later.

You can also send me an e-mail with your domain name and I'll take a look at it from a couple of other tools I use.

Well, I tried sending an email to Unlock the Inbox and it shows postmaster and alias as working.

But it gets even more weird. When I am sending an email to postmaster or abuse on any domain, all messages are being forwarded to the linked accounts. However, the system is also sending a "Delivery Failure" message a few minutes later. That message shows the following content:

Could not deliver message to the following recipient(s):

Failed Recipient:
Reason: Failed to connect to the recipients mail server. No DNS information was found for the '' domain.
Status: 544 5.4.4 Host not found (not in DNS).

Not sure what's going on here.

We currently don't use greylisting because that caused trouble with some of our customers.

Will send you my domains in an email.

Cheers,
Jens
