SM use of the C:\ Drive
Question asked by Merle Wait - 7/21/2015 at 9:38 AM
Answered
We are having to reconfigure and adjust several servers.. due to changing location / et al.....
The question came up, from Server Tech... wanting to know why:
a.) When we do an install, even though we tell SM Install  NOT to install on C:\
install info/folders there anyway.   This is install latest/greatest   SM 14.X.    I thought
it wasn't suppose to do that any more.

b.) What impact even if installed on another drive, does SM have on C:\ drive???
Notice we had alot defrag / cleanup on machines that SM was running on.
Could be coincidence... so I thought I would ask.  ( SM is installed on a different logical
      drive / drive letter)

c.)  What type of "trouble" would be getting into, if we have SM - write/store on different network
       machine / storage device.

All e-mail software, including SmarterMail, has extremely active drive I/O.

While it may be technically possible to use a drive on another machine, I would only do so if it was NAS and connected via FIBER.  Anything else would probably be way too slow for SmarterMail, or any other MX server to properly deal with an external drive.

Agreed... The "server tech", though is implying that SM (which is installed on the separate physical/logical drive) .. is impacting the "0 " Logical Drive/ C:\ . I just don't see how that is possible.. but I am more of an application programmer vs. hardware person

There are several factors to consider here:

  • operating system
  • processor speed
  • memory (4 gig minimum, our latest SmarterMail server, on server 2012, with dual 8 core processors, has 96 gig of memory)
  • hard drive size (our latest server has a 1Tb "C" drive for the operating system and 15Tb drive for SmarterMail (we have a lot of archived data from SmarterMail because of government and HIPAA/HITECH clients, and must also keep logs for 60 months).
  • what else is loaded and running on the SmarterMail server - we prefer dedicated servers
  • DNS caching - should be turned off so you have fresh results and the cache is not corrupted.
unless yours is a very old 2003 server, with few resources, I seriously doubt that SmarterMail is an issue.
