We are planning to upgrade and migrate from the old server with Windows 2003 and SmarterMail 2.6 to the new server with 2012 R2 and SmarterMail 13. After some research I found the following:

Based on this, can we perform in-place upgrade existing installation of SmarterMail 2.6 to 7? Or should there be another step upgrade before 7? Also, where can we download previous versions? Please advise.

Based on reports in previous upgrade posts, you might want to upgrade to Version 7.X first, and then upgrade to the latest version of SmarterMail 13.X

Remember to use the MAJOR UPGRADE procedure in both cases:

  • Uninstall your current version, 2.6, first;

  • REBOOT, to unlock any locked files;

  • BACKUP your SMARTERMAIL PROGRAM and DATA DIRECTORIES;

  • Run Windows Update and install ALL PATCHES;

  • Make certain you have installed .NET 4.0, all service packs, and, depending on the server operating system you are running, .NET 4.5, and all services packs and patches;

  • Install SmarterMail version 7.X and give it a while to make the file structure changes.  Time to do so depends on how many domains, users, and how much e-mail they have stored on the box;

  • UNINSTALL SmarterMail version 7.X;

  • REBOOT to unlock any locked files;

  • BACKUP your SMARTERMAIL PROGRAM and DATA DIRECTORIES;

  • Install the latest version of SmarterMail 13.X;

  • DISABLE the SmarterMail web server and setup  the IIS appropriate to your server installation.  Remember, the SmarterMail web services is designed only to do installations, and not for general operations;

  • Configure all PORTS and HOST NAMES, as required.  These are required after upgrading from anything prior to SmarterMail 8.X

For more information about  port configuration in SmarterMail 8.X and beyond, see my KB article at:

Another major improvement to more recent versions of SmarterMail is the product's capability to handle SPAM, DDoS, Brute Force, and other attacks.  This information is all covered in my antispam document, available at:

Tank you Bruce. This confirms the flow I wanted to follow. I am planning to migrate date to the new server at the level of version 7 and upgrade to 13 on the new server.

Martin
